Our History

From informal dialogue to a structured regional platform

CEE CA SEC grew out of a series of policy conversations, reform partnerships and cross-regional initiatives. Over time, these efforts have evolved into a dedicated platform connecting Central Europe and Central Asia around shared economic and governance priorities.

Milestones

2014

Conceptual Foundations

Experts from Central Europe and Central Asia begin informal consultations on how to better align trade, connectivity and governance reforms across the two regions. Initial policy dialogues highlight the need for an independent, regionally anchored platform.

2017

Early Cooperation Formats

Pilot roundtables and closed-door discussions are organized with ministries, chambers of commerce and think-tanks. These meetings test formats for structured dialogue on trade facilitation, infrastructure corridors and institutional cooperation.

2020

Strategic Focus on Connectivity & Resilience

In the context of global supply chain disruptions and climate-related risks, the initiative sharpens its focus on connectivity, institutional resilience and sustainable development. New partnerships with academic institutions and policy networks emerge.

2023

CEE CA SEC Framework Shaped

The CEE CA SEC framework is articulated around four pillars: Economic Integration & Trade, Governance & Institutions, Sustainability & Environmental Transformation, and Society, Knowledge & Strategic Communication. Work begins on concrete project concepts.

2025

Triangular Cooperation & Global South Links

Building on accumulated experience, the platform expands its cooperation with partners from the Global South, integrating triangular cooperation formats, peer-learning exchanges and joint research initiatives into its core activities.

Institutional & Global Context

Like other global industry and policy platforms, CEE CA SEC operates at the intersection of economic cooperation, governance and communication. Its evolution reflects broader shifts towards rules-based integration, evidence-driven reform and international partnership.

Inspired by institutions that combine advocacy, research and stakeholder engagement, the platform is designed to remain flexible, inclusive and regionally grounded while being open to global experiences and best practices.

The history of CEE CA SEC is therefore not only a timeline of events, but a reflection of how Central Europe and Central Asia position themselves within a rapidly changing global landscape.
